Orchestral Recording

Recording the RPO

Recently, I was invited along to a recording of The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. The Orchestra was playing a set of classic Russian pieces at the G Live venue in Guildford to a sold out hall of just over one-thousand seats. This included Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture which I had written a piece on so I was looking forward to listening to it live and gaining more diverse live recording experience.

Primarily I was interested in learning how to capture a wide array of instruments while minimising obstruction of audience view and performer movement and also how to mix an orchestral recording live. The performance went exceptionally well and I learnt a lot in terms of levelling for orchestral sounds which can be applied to electronic pads. I also gained a better understanding of the importance of texture and the effect certain stereo techniques can have on it, specifically learnt from working on the woodwinds.
